Still not sure if you want to go freelance or not? You still fear the thought of quitting your job for a freelance tester job? How does the freelancer life looks like more exactly? You fear there are dark secrets of going freelance? Well, yes, there are secrets no one speaks about. The thought of just taking life into your own hands might sound terrifying, but pros and cons are everywhere. Sometimes you just have to see what’s behind a door you know nothing about. It’s called going on an adventure.
Now let’s relax a little. I want you to see the dark secrets behind freelancing, see how the freelancer life really looks like. I will make sure you won’t have any surprises.
Working as a freelance tester requires less money from you than you think. I dare you to do some calculations at the end of a month and see for yourself. But working as a freelancer reduces the pressure of work, gives you a flexible program which means you don’t need money for a taxi when you wake up in the morning really tired and wish for another 20 minutes of sleep, you don’t require money for any kind of transportation because guess what? You work from the comfort of your own house.
Working as a freelancer you will notice how your savings grow. And if you are doing it responsibly and consciously they will grow even higher. Going to work implies buying lunch and believe me the temptations are everywhere, on your way to work you might just find yourself buying things you don’t need and many other situations that require from you spending money will be slowly eliminated. A clear example? Coffee! You will not pay every day for coffee. As a freelancer, you will start making groceries, cooking your own food, making your own coffee, which means costs saving!
Stop when you reached your money goal
As a freelancer, you can double your earnings in a month if you do things in a smart way. So why not stop from time to time and go on a holiday? But pay attention and track your invoices. Do it responsibly! Freelancers tend to never stop. But if you managed to earn the amount of money you wanted, take a day off and go somewhere to clear your mind. Big ideas come when you are in relaxing situations and the freelancer life allows you to do it.
Routine is your friend
Everyone is scared of routine but sometimes it can become your best friends, especially as a freelancer. You should start a waking up program, eating schedule, breaks, exercising and so on. The fun thing is you can play with it. You can still have your routine from the backyard of your house, enjoying the sun in a park, drinking a nice cappuccino in a quiet pub. Work from places you’d never imagine doing and allow yourself to do things differently. You can even have a fast trip to another town and work from there.
The worst thing is arriving to work, checking your email, seeing that there are tons of requests that require your attention immediately and realizing that you can throw your to-do list to the garbage. Well, as a freelancer you will not have this problem anymore. No more emails, no more pop-up meetings, no more colleagues that won’t allow you to do your Pomodoro hours, no more people around you who need your help or support. Just you and your laptop being extremely productive.
You might gain some weight
The tricky part is that working from home might cause gaining some weight if you are not careful. It easy to stay in bed, working from the kitchen, bedroom and so on. Make sure you don’t fall into that extreme. Keep yourself active. Walk to a pub, to a park, to a restaurant. Exercise. Eat healthily. If you will wake up someday and look at yourself being fat, you will blame freelancing. But it’s not freelancing, it’s you! Take care of yourself.
These are some of the darkest secrets. You will discover some more and I would love to hear them from you. It’s so interesting to see how freelancers start doing things they never imagined doing. The freelancer life is really interesting, but for sure you learn a lot every single day. You can ask me any kind of questions, I am here to answer them.
